    The Saxons of Eastern Holstein are forcibly relocated to the Rhine area, and their lands taken by the Obotrites, a Wendish (Western Slavic) people. The Danish King Godfred, supporting the Saxons, is drawn into the conflict. Frankish and Danish troop mobilisations along the common border momentarily threaten war, but nothing comes of it. Instead, the Frankish Empire turns its attention to Bohemia, subduing the Wendish Sorbs.

  • Danes raid the Wendish city of Reric
    Drosuk, prince (knjes) of the Obotrites, is captured, and Reric's merchants are forcibly relocated to Hedeby (Haithabu). On the return voyage, the Danes are assaulted by a Frankish army. The Danes manage to break through, but the Danish heir to the throne, Reginald, is slain.
  • The construction of Danevirke is begun
    After the hazardous campaign to Reric, Danish king Godfred begins construction of a fortification along the line of the Eider river and the Slien fjord. This forms the nucleus of a border fortification that is to last for a thousand years (see 1864).

    When Drosuk, upon his release, joins the Franks, he is (allegedly) assassinated at King Godfred's bidding.

    Danes and Obotrites under Earl Glum besiege the Frankish stronghold at Itzehoe, but determined Frankish resistance wins out, and the siege is lifted.

    As the authoritative, if extremely biased, biography of Charlemagne, the "Vita", written by Einhard in his retirement, is an important source to the period.
