    Denmark cedes Norway to Sweden, in return for Swedish Pomerania, later traded for the Duchy of Lauenburg.

  • First edition of the Finnish national epic, "Kalevala"
1848
  • First war for Schleswig-Holstein begins
    Denmark and various German states, including Prussia, go to war over the fate of the three Duchies of Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg. Also known as the Three-Year War.
1849
  • Second edition of the Finnish national epic, "Kalevala"
1850
  • First war for Schleswig-Holstein ends
    Denmark retains control of the Duchies.

  • Papal bull establishes Immaculate Conception of the Virgin
    Pope Pius IX issues papal bull Ineffabilis Deus, declaring that, through a special grace of God, Mary was conceived and born free from original sin.

  • French philsopher Auguste Comte dies

  • The Cobden-Chevalier Treaty
    This free trade agreement between Great Britain and France signalled the end of most of the protectionist measures imposed on trade by the two governments, and introduced a mutual "most favoured nation" status that was to become a model for all similar agreements.

  • The American Civil War begins
    Battles: Fort Sumter, Bull Run 1.

  • The American Civil War continues
    Battles: Antietam, Bull Run 2, Shiloh. First battle with armoured ships (Monitor and Merrimac).
1863
  • The American Civil War continues
    Battles: Chancellorsville, Chickamauga, Gettysburg, Vicksburg.
1864
  • Second War for Schleswig-Holstein
    War erupts between Denmark on one side, and a German union, including Prussia and Austria, on the other. After a disastrous defeat, Denmark loses Schleswig-Holstein and Lauenburg.

    Battles: Petersburg.

  • First Vatican Council begins

  • First Vatican Council ends
    Doctrine of papal infallibility promulgated.
1875
  • Perak War begins
    Reacting to the progressive policies of the new British resident, James W. W. Birch, the sultans of Upper Perak (in NW Malaysia) and other Malay chiefs conspire to murder Birch. After the assassination, British troops are sent into Perak.
1876
  • Perak War ends
    With the capture of the rebellious Malay sultans and chiefs, the British military presence in Malaysia helps to further entrench British political and economic influence in the region.
1886
  • German historian Leopold von Ranke dies
1890
  • Battle of Wounded Knee
    A numerically superior force of the U.S. Seventh Cavalry massacres 3-400 Sioux indians (men, women and children) at Wounded Knee in South Dakota. This was the last major battle between the U.S. Army and the indians of the Great Plains.
1891
  • Invention of the zipper
    Whitcomb Judson patents the first zipper, originally called a "slide fastener".
1894
  • Robert Louis Stevenson dies
1898
  • Spanish-American War
    U.S.A. acquires Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, and Cuba gains independence.
